YOUR
BODY ISN'T BROKEN - IT JUST WANTS TO MOVE SMARTER
by Bryce Mathern, Feldenkrais Instructor
Do you wake up in the morning with an achy body? Do you experience
low-back pain or tightness in your shoulders and neck? Do you find
yourself limiting what you do in your life out of fear that you
will exacerbate an old, lingering injury?
The Feldenkrais method for Somatic Education may be just what you
need to find your way back to living a more vibrant life in a pain
free body.
FELDENKRAIS RETURNS YOUR BODY TO ITS NATURAL MOVEMENT PATTERNS
The Method is based on the idea that form follows function. We all
function - standing, sitting, walking, reaching - in various
ways based on different emotional and physical life experiences.
Over time we begin losing connection to the more organic, spontaneous
ways of moving we developed early in life, becoming stiff and tense
with age.
A specific example would be a knee injury - a very common occurrence
that can have lasting effects on other parts of your body. It is
natural and helpful to begin putting increased weight on the healthy
leg when you injure yourself in order to reduce the pressure and
pain on the injured knee. However, after the injured knee has healed,
the body will often remain stuck in the same misaligned movement
pattern, creating discomfort in the once healthy leg, the hips,
and/or the low back.
The
Feldenkrais Method can help anyone who has experienced physical
and even emotional injury find their way back to moving in a more
natural, integrated and agile way. The founder, Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais,
believed that by changing the way we function, that is remedying
unhealthy movement patterns, we can begin to shift the body to a
more natural, pain free way of living.
Through very gentle, non invasive exercises Feldenkrais Awareness
through Movement classes challenge the brain to shift imbalanced
movement patterns, creating more efficient, intelligent, ease-filled
movement. Lessons are sequences of comfortable, easy movements involving
thinking, sensing, moving and imagining and are for people of all
ages and ability, improving your overall well being by learning
to move with greater ease.
Dr. Feldenkrais was a physicist who worked with the Nobel Prize
winning nuclear physicist Joliot-Curie. In addition to physics,
Dr. Feldenkrais studied engineering and was a black-belt in Judo,
two lines of study that contributed to his transformational movement
techniques. He began teaching his popular method to people in the
United States in the 1970's.
I will begin offering ongoing Tuesday/Thursday classes
at Yoga On Beacon starting September 16th, 8:15 - 9:15am.
Bryce
Mathern finished his Feldenkrais practitioner training
in 2006. He believes that Awareness Through Movement classes are
a wonderful way to bring about healing in the human experience.
By opening up to new somatic patterns the possibility for change
arises. This change happens in the whole self, healing our heart,
mind and soul. In each Feldenkrais lesson taught in ATM classes
he helps students make the somatic connections that allow them
to find their personal wholeness. Bryce has also been studying yoga
for 5 years and has an active practice, having completed the 8 Limb's
Yoga Teacher Training in 2004.
